STAY THANKFUL ALWAYS

With the holidays fast approaching, we are finding ourselves scrambling to buy gifts, decorations, food, stocking stuffers and lattes? I saw that last year (2014), 40% of sales for the ENTIRE year were made in the last two months of the year and I definitely believe it. I don't even go to the mall between November 1st and January 1st because the overwhelming amount of people, the crazy traffic, the overload of holiday decor/music and the subconscious feeling that I need to spend my entire paycheck gives me a mini panic attack.

It is so insane that we (as a society) spend only one day out of the entire year being thankful and then the very next day we exhibit the epitome of consumerism and greed (sometimes even on the same day - depending on when that incredible flat screen TV goes on sale at Walmart.) Personally, I get so caught up in the holidays and my life that I often forget to stand back and thank God for this incredible life I am living and that makes me feel pretty awful.

As a recent postgrad, I already have a job, I am living on my own (in an apartment that I am able to pay for) and I have so many more blessings than I ever thought possible. So, in the spirit of Thanksgiving and my new philosophy of: staying thankful always, I sat down and wrote a few of the things I am thankful for (in no particular order) and have shared them with all of you down below! Some of them are silly and some of them are more serious, but all are sincere.

1. Graduating from college (because, let's be honest, that was a major struggle)
2. Being able to have attended any college at all (as much as I complained along the way, college changed my life and I'm so lucky to have had that opportunity)
3. My car (I was among the many of this world's population that depended on public transportation for a good while, so having a car will always be a constant blessing in my life)
4. My camera and all of the memories I've had the chance to capture
5. My family
6. All of the relationships in my life
7. Torchy (my cat)
8. My faith (whenever I think about God or religion I think of that cover of Let it Be from Across the Universe because it's beautiful and heart-breaking and life-changing. But in all seriousness my faith is a huge part of who I am and I would be nothing without my faith)
9. My job (I'm still in denial about having one so soon after graduating)
10. Being able to afford my own place (also very surreal)
11. Being happy in my own skin (this one is still a struggle but sometimes you just have to fight those tiny hating gremlins in your head that feed all of those negative insecurities)
12. My health (#notavictimoffluseason or any other harmful sicknesses #knockonwood)
13. My crockpot (those dump dinners are no joke)
14. My fridge filled with food (like real, healthy food not just pop-tarts and apple sauce)
15. Filtered water (or access to clean water in general)
16. Living in San Antonio (because sometimes the countdown city gets a bad rap but I wholeheartedly love this place I call home)
17. Texas' version of Fall (last week I wore a sundress and flip flops and today I wore a peacoat and leather boots -- you honestly never know what you're going to get)
18. Growing up with sisters (if you weren't lucky enough to have sisters in your life I feel bad for you [son?] I got 99 problems but not having a sister ain't one)
19. My bed (because suffering on dorm mattresses for 4 years really makes you appreciate your bed from home)
20. My coffee maker (I still am in awe of the magic that is coffee maker timers)
21. Being able to pursue my passions (this is one many people take for granted [myself included] and if you are as lucky as I am you should count your blessings)
22. The support from my loved ones (also something I take for granted that I should bless my lucky stars for)
23. Being able to spend the holidays with my family (because this is a privilege not a right - which is what my mom used to tell me about many things in life. To all you youngins' out there: your mom is ALWAYS right)
24. Concerts (do you realize my obsession yet?)
25. Bulky sweaters (for those of you saying you don't like bulky sweaters: De Nile isn't just a river in Egypt)
26. Dogs (yes, I am both a cat and dog person [GASP])
27. The teachers who have influenced who I am today (props to anyone who is a teacher or is on the path to becoming a teacher - that ish is hard)
28. Bendy straws (yes, I am 23 and love bendy straws - you try drinking sparkling water through a bendy straw and tell me that you didn't have an out-of-body experience)
29. Sally (she buys me bendy straws, how can I not be thankful for her?)
30. Smart Ones frozen meals (recently jumped on this train because they're perfect portions, healthy and take literally no effort)
31. Frozen bananas (my love for bananas only grew with freezing them)

AUSTIN STAYCATION

As you may know from Feather and Steele's last post, we are OBSESSED with concerts.

Just yesterday, I was able to see the X-Ambassadors on their VHS tour in Austin. Let me just say that if you haven't had the chance to check this band out, you definitely should. They just came out with a new album and their sound is so unique and moving. So, be prepared to fall in love. Especially with Casey Harris, their blind keyboardist, who will take your breath away.

I was lucky enough to be able to sneak my camera into the venue (the Scoot Inn) and catch some shots of this incredible show.

{where the pedicabs live}

{the only good part about Austin traffic is accidental bokeh shots}

I put together a short concert video of the show, so enjoy!

CONCERT JUNKIES ANONYMOUS

"Hi, my name is Jennifer and I am addicted to concerts."

If there was a group for concert addicts, I would be a regular member. I can always remember being a concert lover but the obsession really began when I started college. The time when everyone has TONS of disposable income, right? NOT. Maybe it was the fact that I went to school only an hour away from the live music capital of the world (aka Austin, TX) or maybe I was living in some type of fairytale where money falls from the sky. Whatever it was anyone who knows me knows that I am always going to shows.

I still remember the first time I went to a concert in college. I saw The Script (which is an Irish rock band who has kind of fallen off the music scene lately) my freshman year at Stubbs BBQ in Austin, Texas. In addition to being a great BBQ restaurant, Stubbs is also a fairly popular music venue in Austin. If you live near the area, chances are you've been to Stubbs. I went with one of my closest friends and roommate at the time and it was an experience I would never forget. I remember how amazing it was being able to see this band perform and how I immediately felt such a deep connection to the music. I'm pretty sure that show was my gateway drug, because after that show the obsession began. As addictions go, I guess being addicted to live music isn't as bad as hard core drugs, but probably just as expensive.

About a year ago, I decided to round up the number of shows I have been to (out of curiosity) and have kept up the list ever since.

Ever since I first got my DSLR, I have attempted to document every show (possible) that I have attended.

As a result, I ended up having hours and hours of concert footage just sitting in my laptop. So, I decided to put some clips of the footage together and voila! the following concert reel was born!
