Stay Thankful, Always

With the holidays fast approaching, we are finding ourselves scrambling to buy gifts, decorations, food, stocking stuffers and lattes? I saw that last year (2014), 40% of sales for the ENTIRE year were made in the last two months of the year and I definitely believe it. I don't even go to the mall between November 1st and January 1st because the overwhelming amount of people, the crazy traffic, the overload of holiday decor/music and the subconscious feeling that I need to spend my entire paycheck gives me a mini panic attack.

It is so insane that we (as a society) spend only one day out of the entire year being thankful and then the very next day we exhibit the epitome of consumerism and greed (sometimes even on the same day - depending on when that incredible flat screen TV goes on sale at Walmart.) Personally, I get so caught up in the holidays and my life that I often forget to stand back and thank God for this incredible life I am living and that makes me feel pretty awful.

As a recent postgrad, I already have a job, I am living on my own (in an apartment that I am able to pay for) and I have so many more blessings than I ever thought possible. So, in the spirit of Thanksgiving and my new philosophy of: staying thankful always, I sat down and wrote a few of the things I am thankful for (in no particular order) and have shared them with all of you down below! Some of them are silly and some of them are more serious, but all are sincere.

1. Graduating from college (because, let's be honest, that was a major struggle)
2. Being able to have attended any college at all (as much as I complained along the way, college changed my life and I'm so lucky to have had that opportunity)
3. My car (I was among the many of this world's population that depended on public transportation for a good while, so having a car will always be a constant blessing in my life)
4. My camera and all of the memories I've had the chance to capture
5. My family
6. All of the relationships in my life
7. Torchy (my cat)
8. My faith (whenever I think about God or religion I think of that cover of Let it Be from Across the Universe because it's beautiful and heart-breaking and life-changing. But in all seriousness my faith is a huge part of who I am and I would be nothing without my faith)
9. My job (I'm still in denial about having one so soon after graduating)
10. Being able to afford my own place (also very surreal)
11. Being happy in my own skin (this one is still a struggle but sometimes you just have to fight those tiny hating gremlins in your head that feed all of those negative insecurities)
12. My health (#notavictimoffluseason or any other harmful sicknesses #knockonwood)
13. My crockpot (those dump dinners are no joke)
14. My fridge filled with food (like real, healthy food not just pop-tarts and apple sauce)
15. Filtered water (or access to clean water in general)
16. Living in San Antonio (because sometimes the countdown city gets a bad rap but I wholeheartedly love this place I call home)
17. Texas' version of Fall (last week I wore a sundress and flip flops and today I wore a peacoat and leather boots -- you honestly never know what you're going to get)
18. Growing up with sisters (if you weren't lucky enough to have sisters in your life I feel bad for you [son?] I got 99 problems but not having a sister ain't one)
19. My bed (because suffering on dorm mattresses for 4 years really makes you appreciate your bed from home)
20. My coffee maker (I still am in awe of the magic that is coffee maker timers)
21. Being able to pursue my passions (this is one many people take for granted [myself included] and if you are as lucky as I am you should count your blessings)
22. The support from my loved ones (also something I take for granted that I should bless my lucky stars for)
23. Being able to spend the holidays with my family (because this is a privilege not a right - which is what my mom used to tell me about many things in life. To all you youngins' out there: your mom is ALWAYS right)
24. Concerts (do you realize my obsession yet?)
25. Bulky sweaters (for those of you saying you don't like bulky sweaters: De Nile isn't just a river in Egypt)
26. Dogs (yes, I am both a cat and dog person [GASP])
27. The teachers who have influenced who I am today (props to anyone who is a teacher or is on the path to becoming a teacher - that ish is hard)
28. Bendy straws (yes, I am 23 and love bendy straws - you try drinking sparkling water through a bendy straw and tell me that you didn't have an out-of-body experience)
29. Sally (she buys me bendy straws, how can I not be thankful for her?)
30. Smart Ones frozen meals (recently jumped on this train because they're perfect portions, healthy and take literally no effort)
31. Frozen bananas (my love for bananas only grew with freezing them)

Leave me a comment and let me know some of the things that you are thankful for this year!
